I thought we all made art so we didn't have to explain ourselves with artist statements! No explaining here. I'll just give you the facts. Starting with - I'm an artist to the core. I think visually and I can't help it. My life so far is an endless pursuit of pulling unusual ideas out of the air and trying to make them real in some fashion whether successful or not. I started out early with pen and ink and illustration. I majored in Scientific illustration until I realized the science requirements (science is hard!). I fell in love with stone carving and sculpture which led to a sculpture degree at the University of Georgia with an emphasis in stone carving and bronze casting. I was a starving artist after school while happily carving marble at night and airbrushing t-shirts and murals. I found my way to the commercial arts which started at a beer company in Athens, GA doing airbrush signs and merchandise which I loved. I was introduced to computer arts which led me to go back to school at Mississippi State University and getting an MFA in Electronic Visualization. We called it Multimedia back in the day and it introduced me to video, animation, and digital manipulation. I was now hooked on both digital art and traditional stone carving. It was inevitable that I started figuring out ways to put images on stone. With my MFA in hand, I found my way to being employed in Charlottesville VA. Originally as a game designer for one company and presently an Art Director for an educational travel company for the last 16 years.
I live in Charlottesville, VA with my wife Kim and all my 4 legged babies. I'm a founding member of the Virginia Stone Carvers Guild. www.virginiastonecarvers.com, a member of the McGuffey Arts Center. I teach a class at the Open Door Continuing Education on Introduction to Stone Carving (Class starts in March! Go sign up!). I show my art regularly around town and beyond. I've had success as a photographer with awards and prints that toured the states and Australia.
Presently I am obsessed with screenprinting. It's a natural extension of my digital design and photography background and I love the old school-ness about it all. I've only screenprinted on the covers of record albums. Why albums? It's different, It's messy, it's unexpected and I love records! I never know what I'm going to get until the last color is applied and it's the most excited I've been about new art in a while. Since all the albums have different cover art it makes each screenprint completely unique. No two are exactly alike!
Thanks again for perusing my site. I hope you found something you liked. This is a new type of site for me to use. It's more sales driven which is always a trick for artists but I think it does a great job of offering my artwork to YOU. That's the whole point is for ME to create something that someone like YOU can appreciate and love. Thanks and enjoy.
